How will the Helix fare in the saddle?
Primal are known for their unique and bold prints, especially in their relaxed fit jerseys, however the Exion Helix set falls under their Elite range which is higher end and more race-specific. Being a fan of the brand, I was excited to see how the Helix fared in the saddle. I chose to take a spin on Easter Monday, which was a lovely sunny day but in hindsight I could have done with some warmers as it was a little chilly.
First things first is fit. I went for a Small up top and Medium size for the Primal Women's Exion Helix Bib Shorts. Although the sleeves on the Primal Women's Exion Helix Jersey seemed a little tight when I first tried it on, I realised it was fine once I had jumped on the bike. I would say that the size guide on the product page is spot on and if I had up-sized the top and shorts, they would have been a bit loose. The 4-way stretch allows you to slip in and zip up for a close - but comfortable - fit.
It looks awesome. You will find a range of themes in Primal designs, from floral to rock n roll, however the Exion Helix is more of a classic design - flattering too. The bright green is a cool contrast on the dark grey and even attracted a passenger on the ride!
Smooth and sleek
The Primal Women's Exion Helix Jersey and shorts are constructed from high end fabrics which feel smooth and sleek when on. They've incorporated mesh paneling with SLR Ion fabric, which both provide the ventilation I'll need for hot Summer days (when they finally come around!). They have nailed the aerodynamic cut - you can see this in the extended Z92 fabric in the sleeves and legs, which allows for airflow and reduces drag. Finishing touches, such as the flatlock seams and tagless label, just give the jersey and shorts a high quality feel.
Exion Helix bib shorts
Having only owned a few types of shorts, I am not an expert when it comes to the chamois. These Primal Women's Exion Helix Bib Shorts offer an Italian HX8 Carbon Chamois which is designed to form to the body, with multiple density and 4-way stretch. I think that the pad did me well during 30 miles in the saddle and I didn't need to take breaks to re-adjust, as I have previously with other brands.
Despite feeling the occasional chill of coastal winds, it was a comfortable and enjoyable ride. I look forward to slipping the kit on again once the weather picks up!
