What is parkrun?
parkrun is a community event that offers free, weekly, timed runs that are open to all ages and all abilities. These runs take place on every weekend – come rain or shine, summer or winter. parkrun offers 5KM runs for everyone on Saturdays and 2 KM runs for juniors on Sundays.
It is completely free
parkrun isn’t about making money: it’s about getting people out on their feet, taking in the fresh air and meeting other people. Right from the start it’s been a community project where runners can always run for free.
Where and when?
parkrun is now a worldwide club, available in 9 countries:
- New Zealand
- South Africa
There are now over one million runners signed up and it’s fast gaining popularity. Some people do the events on holiday to meet the locals, explore the area and to work off their indulgences!
You don’t have to be a runner
parkrun is open to everyone and offers the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in a safe surroundings with loads of people around. So if you’re coming back from an injury, you want to get outside for a walk with a friend, or if you just don’t like running, then you can still sign up and join in!
It’s only as competitive as you make it
parkrun isn’t a race, it’s a run. In fact, some people even choose to walk around the course, so there’s no pressure to go all-out if you don’t want to. They’re timed so if you want to then you can race yourself, or your friends. It’s entirely up to you.
Regardless of your goal, parkrun encourages you to celebrate your participation. Once you’ve done 50 events, you join the 50 Club and there’s another club when you’ve completed 100 events.
