It’s the last leg. You’ve already swum and cycled. You might be starting to feel fatigued but there’s one more job to do.

Whatever the distance, the right pair of running shoes will make the difference between simply finishing and finishing strong in your triathlon.

What to look for

Finding the right pair of running shoes for your triathlon is slightly different to choosing shoes for simply running in.

Most of the time, runs are not preceded by a swim and a cycle. If you’re new to triathlon, you might still be getting used to the feeling of your legs adjusting between the three disciplines.

Support

As with any running shoes, it’s vital that you find a pair that is right for your own running style.

Fatigue, as well as the unusual feeling of running directly off the bike, means it's even more important to make sure you have adequate support and stability in order to prevent injury.

What’s best for the distance

Another consideration is the length of the event. In a sprint triathlon, being able to quickly change into your running shoes in transition can have a much bigger impact than in a longer event so look for styles that are easy to get on.

Wiggle tip: Switching the conventional laces for dhb Elastic Lock Laces can make all the difference.

A lighter, less cushioned shoe will be faster and more responsive over shorter distances. For long distances, you’ll need heavier cushioning to offer better protection.

Although you’re not directly transitioning from swim to run, there is still a chance of residual dampness which can make your shoes tricky to put on. Go for styles that are breathable and well-ventilated.

Wiggle tip: Try a sprinkle of baby powder or Vaseline around the entry points for an easy transition.

Remember that you’ll be running without socks. Make sure you choose a pair of running shoes that have a snug fit. A lining will prevent rubbing and blisters. Before your event, practice running in them without socks.
